Ashley Stroupe's Reflections on AMASE 2007

As we approached the gate at Oslo airport for the flight to Longyearbyen, I started to see some familiar faces. I was coming home to “Family” and my spirits lifted. The last minute troubles with the Rover were momentarily forgotten as warm greetings were exchanged and connections re-established. I briefly recollected my trepidation standing at this same place one year before – inexperienced and worried: would I disappoint? Would I be a liability? But the warm hugs left all that in the past.

No sooner than the planes had landed in Longyearbyen, my cell phone began to light up with calls from “Steelie Europe”, a special phone line that Hans Amundsen provides for Steelie so that he can be found during the preparations for AMASE. This year, owing to conflicts with a trip to Australia, I was arriving late for AMASE. My job, at least this one, was to bring over things that people had forgotten, items that were lost and broken, and if possible, the crowning touch to margaritas.
